All I remember is Lucas completely freaking out and me running around trying to figure out what we were going to do. I had remembered from my dreams that we were never actually killed. I had always woken up before anything terrible could happen. Nobody ever died in my dreams…wait, let me rephrase that. No one close to me had died. My family, my friends, Lucas and I, we were always fine. Lucas never really trusted my judgement or the fact that I depended on the dreams, but I didn’t have a choice. He soon realised that he didn’t really have a choice either…if he wanted to live.
“Ok, Lucas. Just calm down. I need you to listen to me. In about half an hour, all those people we just heard about on the TV are going to die. The people that were in the store have been infected. They’ll turn into zombie’s. There’s nothing we can do now. We need to get out of here.”
“Calm down? You want me to CALM DOWN?! There are zombies running around in that shop, Amy! We’re fucked. We’re so completely fucked!”
“Not if we leave now. I remember in the dream last night, we got in the car…um, we filled it up with petrol at the station just outside of town. We didn’t want to go anywhere nea…”
“Anywhere near those zombies?!”
“LUCAS! Would you just shut up for a second and let me think. If you want to die, go on, keep arguing with me! Trust me, you won’t last long.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!”
“Never mind! We didn’t want to go anywhere near the breakout so you said that we should just keep driving.”
"Shouldn’t we get weapons or something? Like, to defend ourselves in case those brain munchers try to turn us into dessert.”
“That’s the smartest thing you’ve said all day.”
“I have my moments.”
“The only thing is, where the hell are we supposed to get them from? We can’t go into the city, it’s way too dangerous. We already have nothing to use against them. What if some of them got out?”
“Well, I’ve watched quite a few zombie movies and we might have some stuff just lying around the house we could use. Just for now, until we get something better.”
“Like?”
“Just off the top of my head we’ve got a crowbar, an axe, some hammers… uhh, shovels? A lawn mower!”
“What the fuck are we gonna do with a lawn mower?”
“We’ll mow them down!”
“Are you insane?”
“A little bit.”
“Sometimes I worry about you, Lucas.”
“Oh, you really don’t have to. My friend Harry here looks out for me.”
“Harry? Who the hell is Harry?”
“Right here. The beautiful man standing beside me.”
“Stop being a smart ass, Lucas! It’s really not the time!”
“You’re getting angry again…You know that turns me on. Does that mean you wanna fu…”
“LUCAS!”
“BAHAHAHA! I’m sorry babe. It’s just too funny.”
“Can you please stop stuffing around? I don’t want to become a zombie’s dinner.
“Ok, I’m sorry.”
“Let’s go get the stuff. I just wanna get out of here as soon as I can.”
“Do you still want me to bring the lawn mower?”
“LUCAS!”
The weapons we had at the time weren’t the best. But they had to do. I knew that we had to get out as soon as possible. We left that night and drove into town. Lucas lost it completely. He was like a little girl who had been caught sneaking a dollar from his mother’s handbag to buy an ice cream. Terrified and thinking of every possible consequence. From what I recall, we didn’t have any trouble getting any weapons. Well, I didn’t . Lucas…I don’t even know what happened to him. I think he pissed himself. Literally. He still refuses to tell me the truth. Thankfully for us, the rest of those brain obsessed crazies were still locked up in the store. We didn’t know how much longer the military would be able to hold them back, but we both knew it wouldn’t be long. We got our weapons and we got out of there. There was no way we were staying anywhere near that place.
“Hey, babe. Can you turn on the radio? I wanna know what’s going on.”
“Now for an update on the mall, we cross over to Sarah.”
“Thanks Jim. I’m down here at the plaza, where hundreds of armed soldiers have completely barricaded the entire mall. I’m just going to see if I can get any word on this catastrophic event. Excuse me, sir? My name is Sarah Donovan and I’m reporting for Channel 4 radio news. I was just wondering if I could have a few minutes of your time to ask some questions?”
“Fine. I don’t have much time. Hurry up.”
“Ok. Do you know what has caused these people to act in such a way?”
“No one is really sure at this stage, but we believe it is a very dangerous virus.”
“Some people are calling this “a zombie outbreak”. What are your thoughts on this accusation?
“That’s absolutely ludicrous. Nothing like that would ever happen. Zombies are a part of fictional movies and teenage novels. Everyone needs to remember that this reality. Zombies do not exist, have never existed and will never exist. Ever.”
“Uhh, ok... How many people are assumed to be trapped in the building?”
“That is classified information. I’m sorry. This interview is over.”
“Well, as you can see behind me, extreme precautions have been put in place to protect the community. I have also been informed that no one is to try and enter the premises under any circumstance. Penalties for such an attempt are yet to be decided, however I am assured that they will be harsh and no mercy will be taken upon intruders. That’s all from me, back to you Jim.”
“This is ridiculous. They can’t hide this from people. They need to know!”
“There’s nothing we can do, Amelia. Obviously they don’t want people to know because they’d go absolutely nutto. Then there’d be people running around everywhere screaming “ZOMBIE” and the whole situation would just escalate out of control.”
“I know, but, I can’t just sit back and watch this unfold in front of me.”
“Hey, at least we know we’re still relatively safe. They haven’t got out of the shop yet.”
“It won’t be much longer though.”
“What do you mean?”
“I had a dream last night.”
“Oh, Jesus. Here we go.”
“But obviously you don’t give a shit.”
“Ahhh, go on then. What happened?”
“It looked about late afternoon…probably around 4 or 5 o’clock? The soldiers were still there, weapons and all that jazz. And just out of the blue, there’s this massive bang on the main doors. At the entrance. All the soldiers look really freaked out. They all start gripping their guns really tight. There’s another bang, louder this time.”
“And let me guess, there’s one more huge bang and the doors collapse. Out comes this massive swarm of zombies and the soldiers take open fire on them.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, I heard you. I mean…WHAT THE FUCK, AMELIA!”
“They’re going to get out and we need to be ready to fight. Not many people will realise what’s going on. Only the ones who are obsessed with the whole zombie thing will know. They’ll all know already come to think of it.”
“Hey you know what we should do?”
“Oh god…what?”
“We should try and find one of those zombie obsessed people. They can help us.”
“Actually, that’s a really good idea.”
“I know, I thought of it.”
“Yes, Lucas. Here, have an imaginary gold star.”
“I’d just like to thank mum and dad. My sister, Lily. My teacher’s and mentors…”
“Lucas, stop being a dick.
Could've made a cheeky little Half Life reference with the crowbar. :P
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean? Half Life?
ReplyDeleteJulian, Don't confuse her.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant, lots of dialogue, well written, I like it, funny too. I'd just recommend every now and again actually tell the reader who is talking, because it gets confusing with the massive chains, even though there are only two people.
I Freakon Love it.
